توسکا ییلاقی، درختی خزان کننده از تیرۀ توس، بومی جنگلهای هیرکانی شمال ایران و قفقاز است و در طبیعت تا ارتفاع ۲۵ متر رشد میکند.
پوست درخت به رنگ قهوهای تیره تا سیاه است. برگها بیضی-کشیده، در قاعده تقریباً قلبیشکل تا کاملاً قلبیشکل، دندانهدار، به طول ۱۵ سانتیمتر و عرض تا ۱۰ سانتیمتر هستند. سطح بالایی برگها سبز تیره و کمی براق و سطح زیرین آنها کمرنگتر است.
گلهای نر روی سنبلۀ آویخته به رنگ قهوهای تیره تا ۱۰ سانتی متر، و گل های ماده روی سنبلۀ ایستاده کوچکتر، پس از لقاح به مخروط کوچک و قهوهای تیره تبدیل میشود. این مخروطها تا بهار سال بعد روی درخت باقی میمانند.
Alnus subcordata
Alnus subcordata, the Caucasian alder is a deciduous tree in family Betulaceae. It is native to Hyrcanian forests of northern Iran and Caucasus, grows up to 25m in the wild.
The bark is dark brown and blackish. The leaves are ovate- elliptic, subcordate to cordate at base, toothed, to 15cm long and up to 10cm wide. They are dark green and slightly glossy above and paler beneath. Male and female flowers are in different catkins; the male is dark brown, drooping and up to 10cm long; the female is smaller, upright catkin which, after fertilization, ripens into a distinctive small dark brown cone. Spent cones persist right through to the following spring.
