ممرز، درختی است خزان کننده، از تیره توس و بومی جنگل های شمال ایران است و پراکنش آن تا اروپا ادامه دارد. این درخت همراه با درختان بلوط و راش دیده می شود.
درختی است به بلندی تا ۲۵ متر با تنه گرد و رگه دار، با پوست صاف به رنگ خاکستری. شاخههای آن قهوهای، با کرکهای کوتاه پراکنده است. برگها متناوب، به طول تا ۱۰ سانتیمتر و عرض تا ۵ سانتیمتر، بیضوی تا تخممرغی و نوکدار، با رگه های برجسته و لبه دندانه ارهای. گل آذین به طول ۲-۵ سانتیمتر، آویزان، در حالت میوهدار به طول تا ۱۵ و به عرض ۶ سانتیمتر است. میوه آن فندقه تخممرغی، به طول تا ۱۰ میلیمتر است.
Carpinus betulus Linnaeus
The common hornbeam, is a deciduous tree in family Betulaceae. It is native to Western Asia to Europe. It occurs at elevations up to 1,000 meters.
It reaches the height of 25m, and often has a fluted and crooked trunk. The bark is smooth and greenish-grey. The leaves are oval to ovate, up to 10cm long and 5cm across, double-toothed around the margin. The upper leaf surface is dark green, the underside a paler green and it turns a rich yellow before falling. Male and female catkins are borne separately in early summer on the same tree. Male catkins are up to 5cm long, female are much smaller. The fruit is a distinctive three-lobed bract ripening in autumn and persisting on the tree through to the following spring.
