آزاد، درختی خزان کننده از تیرۀ نارونیان و بومی شمال و غرب ایران، شرق آناتولی و قفقاز است.
درختی است به بلندی تا ۲۵ متر با تاج گسترده و تنۀ راست. پوست تنه صاف و خاکستری-نقره ای است که با گذر زمان پوسته پوسته می شود. برگ ها بیضوی- مستطیلی به طول تا ۸ و عرض تا ۵ سانتی متر با دندانۀ ارهای ساده؛ سطح فوقانی برگ ها سبز تیره، گاهی زبر و در امتداد رگبرگ ها کرکدار است.
گل های کوچک و سبز رنگ در فصل بهار ظاهر می شود. میوۀ آن فندقۀ کوچک به قطر حدود ۵ میلیمتر است.
Zelkova carpinifolia
Zelkova carpinifolia, the Caucasian Elm, is a deciduous tree in the family Ulmaceae. It is native to Northern Iran and Caucasus Mountains.
It is a slow-growing, long-lived tree growing to over 25m in the wild. It’s easily distinguished by its short trunk divided into numerous upright branches. The Bark is Grey and smooth, flaking with age, on a fluted trunk. The Leaves are elliptic to oblong, to 8cm long and 5cm across, with parallel veins ending in triangular teeth and dark green. The male and female flowers are both small and green, in separate clusters on the same plant in spring. The fruit is a small, rounded capsule.
